Casting will be Tuesday 28th and Wednesday 29th February, with recalls and a possible dance round later that week.
Valentine White - (early 20’s) The leader of the apprentices. Attractive without being handsome. Rather intellectual looking. Falls in love with Susie. Plays the piano (this can be mimed but someone with basic piano skills would be great).
Gus Field – (mid – late 20’s) Full of character. Comical but pleasant looking. Described in the script as being gangly and all arms and legs. Tall and thin.
Lee Calhoun - (late 20’s – early 30’s) - Very dapper and sportingly dressed but looks like a boy of 16 or 17, also very small. He is very aggressive and super southern.
Seymour Fleming - (late 40’s upwards) - Manager of the Surf and Sand Playhouse. A corpulent gentleman, fifty or more. Constantly dressed in a business suit. Looks like the proverbial undertaker. He loves to yell and throw his weight about. A bully.
Steve Edwards (Mid 20’s) - Attractive intelligent young man. Has a natural confidence about him. A young New York theatre producer.
Peter (late teens) Apprentice – Athletic young man who would rather jump an obstacle than walk around it.
Bob - (late teens) Apprentice – An athletic young man always stripped to the waist and flexing his biceps.
Don - (Late teens) Apprentice – Very dapper. A sub-ivy leaguer. Classically good looking.
Susie Ward (18-24) - An enchanting girl. Forthright, uninhibited and obviously in love with Val.
Terry Thompson - (18-early 20’s) - Full of spirit with a beguiling face. She has great ambition. Likeable and has a love hate relationship with Gus.
Jennifer Owen – (late teens) Ex child star. Slim and lovely. Very poised. Can speak out of turn but has a very warm side to her.
Phyllis Owen – (late 40’s upwards) Mother to Jennifer. An ex actress. Her life is lived through Jennifer. She is the typical stage mother.
Bunny Byron - (Late 20’s – Early 30’s) Her father owned the theatre and she has shares in it. She has a kind heart and loves having the apprentices around.
Betty - (Late teens) Apprentice – A lean lanky girl with spectacles. A bit of a worrier.
Libby - (late teens) Apprentice - The youngest of the group. Baby faced and trying to not grow up.
Ann - (late teens) - Apprentice – A bit of a tom boy. Full of life and zest.
